Globe Valves were born in the industrial revolution due to the need of media like steam to be regulated. Globes operate through linear action like gate valves but the path is not straight through. Globes are an under and over flow like an S bend. The disc is lowered over the seat area forcing down to a tight seal closure. Therefore they can be on / off operation and have various degrees of opening throttling flows to a desired amount. In essence with a modulating actuator they become control valves. Control valves however have special seating arrangements. The easiest form of representation and operation of a globe valve is that of your basic plumbing tap.
Globe valves can be brass, iron, steel and stainless materials. Most are metal seated however in certain applications a soft seat can be of benefit. Sizes range from 8nb to 1200nb in pressures from 200psi to class 1500 (approx. 3500psi). For further references to API class valves refer to the Industries – Petrochemical section. They are available in threaded, socket weld, buttweld and flanged. We have a comprehensive range of globe valves of various designs and seat options to suit most applications.
Screw-down non-return valves also known as SDNR valves are also supplied by us based on the globe valve configuration. This involves valve modifications to the valves to convert them into a combination check valve function with the isolation or throttling ability of the globe. Most commonly they are fully open or fully closed. These valves can be straight through or right-angle pattern. SDNR valves are not an off the shelf item and the modification lead time can be a week depending on the enquiry. Typically they are low pressure valves up to ANSI 300 or PN40 or even the older style BST F or H.
Marine specific valves
MARINE Valves are specific for that industry manufactured from ASTM B62 and ASTM B148 (Bronze and NI Bronze) materials.
Industrial and API valves
The VGL-B501 is a bronze union bonnet globe valve that has stainless steel trim traditionally a steam service valve.
The Pegler Hattersley Figure 5 is a traditional industrial PN32 bronze globe valve with bronze trim.
Bronze flanged globe valve known as the “spacesaver globe valve” is a general industrial and marine bronze trim globe valve. It comes with an option of SDNR (also known as a stop check) feature. This allows the globe valve to function as a check valve also whilst it is in the open position.
Bellows Sealed Globe Valves & Euro chlor Valves Australia
The majority of our bellows sealed globe valves are forged steel and cast steel. They are for general service in the petrochemical and power generation industries.
Specialists Chemical Service Valves – Euro Chlor
Certain chemical services require special approvals and are manufactured to higher standards with compliant materials to suit a particular service. Fluorine (F2), Phosgene (COCL2), Chlorine (CL2), Hydrogen Chloride (A-HCL), Hydrofluoric Acid (A-HF) and other chloro-fluorinated compounds that display similar hazards are examples. We have two types both compliant to Euro Chlor: Bellows sealed and packed gland in both straight through and angle patterns. These valves can be in manual ie handwheel operated or with actuators so they can be operated automatically in either on /off style or as modulating control valves.
Euro Chlor latest updates and certification for 2021/2022 apply and now one of the few companies globally with this certification. You may also find that the above chemicals along with Ammonium Nitrate, Hydrogen Cyanide, and Sodium Cyanide applications still get specified to have Euro Chlor Approvals (even though they are not on liquid or gaseous Chlorine) and this is due to the fact of the potential dangers to atmosphere and by specifying such a stringent world class standard the valves are literally the best of the best.
Industrial Service Bellows Valves
Our standard port Bellows sealed forged steel valve range in class 800 is from 15nb to 50nb. Flanged Bellows sealed Globe valves in Ductile Iron or Cast steel. PN16 range in size from 15nb to 300nb and PN 40 cast steel from 15nb to 400nb. All of which are also generally available from Australian stock. As of September 2022 we now have ASA 150 and ASA 300 50nb to 200nb available. This makes it easy to retrofit / upgrade site requirements from standard globe valves.
ASA 150 flanged bellows sealed valves offer the convenience of replacing conventional gland packed valves with their matching ASME dimensions.
Synonymous with quality since the bellows came into being around 1975 is the Hattersley brand from the UK. The range covers both gates and globes with the volume market being the forged steel class 800 / 900 and 1500. Our staff have sold and continue to sell Hattersley valves to the existing customer base and on high end service applications. Hattersley valves class 150 / 300 and 600 flanged cast steel bellows are from 2″ to 8″.
Piston Valves
There are basically 2 variants of Piston Valves each operate totally differently with their own operating characteristics these being the traditional style Piston Valve and the Angle Pneumatic Piston Valve.
Traditional Piston Valves
1: These Valves look like globe valves but their operation is not dependant on a conventional disc but rather like a piston in a cylindrical sleeve. Raising or lowering the piston allows flow through the inlet / outlet orifice holes in the sleeve. This design is primarily for isolation (on or off) not control. The majority of these are handwheel operated however they can be actuated. They range in size from 1/2″ (15nb) through to 8″ (200nb).
These valves incorporate upper and lower sealing rings that are held in place by lantern bushings. When the valve is open, the piston sidewall seals against the upper sealing ring, preventing leakage out through the stem and valve bonnet. When the valve is closed, the piston seals against the lower sealing ring, again preventing any leakage through the valve. Pistons are arranged so that they move only linearly and do not rotate when the stem rotates. By nature of their operation they are usually class VI shut off. Because of their robust build and long lifespan they have been mostly used on saturated or superheated steam and hot water services. However, they are also capable of handling gases such as oxygen nitrogen and hydrogen along with heat transfer oils and various chemicals.
Many will remember the Klinger KVN Piston Valves to which we offer a similar quality without the Branded price tag.
For Flanged unit data 15nb through to 200nb contact our office as they are available in cast iron PN16 and WCB cast steel ANSI 150 and ANSI 300. Who uses our Valves?
Small Bore Pneumatic Angle Piston Valves
2: The Angle Piston Valve which is actuated usually by pneumatics raising or lowering a disc like a globe valve so in effect it acts as a solenoid valve and in smaller sizes 1/2″ (15nb) up to 2″ (50nb). By comparison they are a light patten with some in brass bodies but most are stainless steel. These are NOT a true piston valve however have been generically termed as such. They are pneumatically actuated globe valves.
