General Industrial ball valves in brass steel and stainless, petrochemical ball valves, DK-Lok API6D Trunnion Pipeline ball valves Australia

What are ball valves and whereare they used?

Ball valves once relatively expensive when they started to enter the market in the 1960’s are now an inexpensive item particularly when actuation is required. We offer these in various materials from plastic, brass, steel, stainless and exotic alloys such as Titanium to suit specific applications. Seats are in various soft materials, predominantly teflon to metal seated used on severe services and control functions. As these valves are quarter turn they are mostly used in off / off applications, the exceptions being when specifically made to suit control functions where seats, balls and bodies are special. Prior to ball valves coming onto the market plug valves where used and these still have their applications.

What types of ball valves are there?

Pressure ratings at CWP or cold working pressures can range from a mere 100psi to 6,000 psi. They will mostly always be limited pressure/ temperature wise by their seats and seals. Soft seating should give you drip tight sealing in either flow direction. They can be specifically approved by various authorities such as AGA for certain gas applications in Australia, WM or water marked for potable water or Firesafe to API standards in petrochemical markets. End connections can be socket, threaded, wafer or flanged. Sizes range from 6nb (1/8″) to 1500nb (60″).

For information on general industry and some petrochemical valves also refer to the ARITA Product Section. Instrumentation ball valves under DK-Lok Instrument Product Section and for all upstream and downstream API valves located in the Industry heading sub heading Petrochemical. Specific data sheets or general arrangement drawings per item can be supplied at request or with quotation.

Metal seated Ball valves in addition to the SEGMENTED ball valves in the control valve section are also available from stock in Australia. The standard 3 piece threaded and 2 piece flanged stainless steel valves have stellited 316 seats. They are uni-directional with a vented ball on the upstream side. For a metal seated valve these are quite economical. For the more severe services valve materials like Titanium or duplex with special coatings are made to order. Traditionally they have always been long lead items (24 plus weeks) however with our streamlined production we can offer even large bore valves say in class 600 in 6 to 8 weeks – DELIVERED. Very few (if any) manufacturers or suppliers globally can match that. In a lot of cases these will have actuators and therefore sometimes termed as control valves.

General Industrial manual metal seated ball valves are from DN8 (1/4″) to DN150 (6″) normally from stock. These are threaded 1/4″ to 4″, wafer or flanged from 1″ to 6″. These valves have a lever as standard however as they have an ISO mounting pad it is easy to mount them with electric or pneumatic actuators. This is particularly handy when flow control is required with the V port option.

Metal seated 3 way ball valves are in both L and T port design from 1/2″ (DN15) through to 2″ (DN50) with threaded connections for shut off pressures up to 3000psi. Flanged 3 way ball valves are from 1/2″ (DN15) through to 8″ (DN200). All ports are on the horizontal plain.

Metal seated 4 way valves are in the same sizes and pressures as the 3 ways with all ports on the horizontal plain.

Metal seated 5 way ball valves are more complex than the others having both porting in the horizontal and vertical plain. The 5 way valves are from 1/2″ (DN15) to 8″ (DN200) with flanged connections.

As of November 2024 ASME Class 900 3 piece metal seated, stainless steel body valves are available for purchase from 1/4″ (DN8) to 2″ (DN50) in both NPT or socket weld connections. These valves also have an ISO mounting pad for ease of electric or pneumatic actuation. Data sheet to be released shortly.

General Industry

General Industrial stainless steel balls valves are used in a myriad of applications in the industrial sector from HVAC, plumbing, mining, food processing, chemical service, water and waste water. With different seat options they can also be used in steam / hot water service up to 250 Deg C.

The inclusion of Brass Ball Valves and Bronze Ball Valves in screwed and flanged for general industrial, marine, HVAC and gas (AGA) sectors has been brought about by customer demands and also included below.

These 3 way valves are available in standard lever op or with an ISO mounting pad for extension stems or actuation. Instrumentation 3 way valves start at 1/4″ and go to 1″ for pressure ranges to 10000psi. Industrial 3 ways are from 1/4″ to 2″ screwed, 1000psi rated or flanged 1/2″ to 12″ max 280PSI. Australian stocks from 1/4″ through to 6″ (DN8 – DN150). Piggable 3 way valves are available to 12″ size with factory lead times.

VCS ball valve stem extensions are a very cost effective way to lift actuation away from any heat in the production hence insulating the actuator particularly required on electrics to alleviate thermal cut outs. They allow for lagging of pipework and also give an additional double sealing within the extension. The VBL-SSE units are manufactured to suit ISO direct mount valves which means retrofitting these to any existing ISO valves on site is very quick and economical. Deadman levers can also be attached to the topworks in lieu of a standard lever or actuation. Standard extension is 100mm with options of 75/150/200 and 300mm available.

316 Stainless Steel Deadman Ball Valves also known as a Spring Return Handle Ball Valve will automatically shut itself off when you let go of the handle. This is due to spring action housed inside the lever. Without the pressure against the spring, the handle will return to its original position. Valves can be supplied complete or as separate levers as they can be retrofitted to existing ISO mounting pad style 2 piece, 3 piece and flanged straight through ball valves as well as 3 way valves. Valve pressure ranges start at 280 psi right up to 3000psi in firesafe and non-firesafe designs, flanged and threaded BSP NPT. Valve size ranges start at 1/4″ (8nb) through to 4″ (100nb). The flanged Deadman Valve VBL-S154DMV is available in sizes DN15 to DN 100 (1/2″ to 4″). The flanging is ANSI 150 drilled or BST D / E. VCS valves are in API607 firesafe or non firesafe designs.

A NOTE OF IMPORTANCE DEADMAN VALVES ARE IN ESSENCE AN AUTOMATIC FAIL CLOSED OPERATION (USUALLY) THEY OPERATE QUITE QUICKLY FLUID DYNAMICS COMES INTO PLAY PARTICULARLY WHEN ON HIGH PRESSURES.

Chemical service

Chemical service ball valves can be fully PFA lined for resistance to Salts, Acid and Alkali solutions. Bodies can be cast iron or steel however these days 304 stainless steel is an economical option. This material is often preferable as a back-up to the valve lining. Sizes up to 150nb are available from stock in Australia.

AZ Valves (AZ ARMATUREN) from Germany manufacture a complete range of family fully lined high integrity products. The NVN is a class 150 flanged ball valve available from 1/2″ (15nb) through to 8″ (200nb). These valves can have Ductile Iron, Cast Steel or Stainless-steel bodies in either PFA or FEP lining.

Petrochemical – Oil and gas

Petroleum Industry stocks are available Ex Australia in both standard floating type and Pipeline Trunnion versions up to class 1500. Generally between 350nb and 450nb depending on the class rating those sizes and above are from Indent overseas. Valvitalia API6D pipeline ball valves and control valve versions are available and on indent fast tracked from overseas stock. We also carry a range of spares for the Valvitalia range in stock Australia. The most popular and standard are the side entry CB54 and CB55 valves from Valvitalia. The CB 56 is a metal seated C ball design and is used on control valve applications, For data on the CB56 refer the control valve section from the PRODUCTS menu. Other Valvitalia options are the CB51 and CB52 side entry FULLY WELDED design and the TOP ENTRY being the CB58 and CB59.

Valvitalia 32″ Class 1500 Pneumatic SR Valves or HIPPS valves (High Integrity Pressure Protection System) designed to protect downstream critical systems from over-pressure events.

Flanged Valves

Twinvalve Double Block and Bleed Ball valves are a side entry body design with dual Ball with a bleed valve installed between the two main line valves.

Orbie Press Seal rising stem ball valves are a unique ball valve operation. Typically they are found in metering isolation, flowlines etc in the Oil and gas distribution sectors. Their camming action gives exceptional life and long term reliability over traditional ball or plug type valves.

Flanged floating ball valves are available ASA 150, ASA 300 and ASA 600. Some of these valves are also available in Table D/E and H flanged but they conform to the ANSI face to face dimensions. They are available in 2 piece (standard) and unibody design (one piece). Another variation is the wafer or space saver design which has a very short face to face.

Electric actuated firesafe and non firesafe ball valves ASA 150 flanged and ASA 300 flanged as well as DIN and AS2129 Table D/E in on / off and modulating service are available in Australia from our local branches. Valves are in cast steel or stainless steel and actuators in a variety of voltages and options such as EX / ATEX Explosion proof. Data on 150lb rated stainless steel valves mounted to the actuator is below for reference.

Threaded or socket weld ends

Small bore 1/4″ (8nb) through to 2″ (50nb) 3 piece class 800 ball valves are commonly in both A105 and 316 Stainless Forged Steel body materials from stock. There are options of 304 Stainless, F51 Duplex or LF2 steel bodies with appropriate trims. All comply to BS 5351 and are API 607 firesafe certified. End connections are NPT or Socket weld. API class 1500 ball valves within these sizes and specifications are also available.

Below 2″ (50nb) valves are also available in threaded and socket weld ends in the petrochemical range (forged steel and stainless). Most of these are Firesafe as per the flanged valves. They are commonly class 800 and class 1500. Ball valves are also quote common in the instrumentation package right down to 1/16″ in size. These can be 2 way, 3 way 4 way and 5 ways diverting

Cryogenics

CRYOGENIC Valves are available from 8nb through to 50nb in Threaded end and 15nb through to 100nb in ANSI 150 Flanged ends. These valves have extended stems and vented balls to suit temperatures down to – 196 Deg C. Currently Australian stock in the threaded valves are for pressures up to 1000psi which covers most applications. New incoming valves will be 2000psi.
